I’m old enough to remember the crowds greeting the return of Ayatollah Khomeini from exile in 1979, the Iranian government and its hostage crisis, the crowds chanting “Death to America”, Hijab wearing women saying “We are not terrorists, we are Muslims”, the hatred of the Shah… I also remember the Venezuelans joyfully voting Hugo Chavez into power… of course that was thirty or more years ago. Now it makes me happy to see the joy with which the young exalt in their newly gained freedom from the oppressive yokes created by their grandparents. I also feel a sense of resignation since I’d bet within a few decades the people will have voted for their chains all over again. Human nature is invariant across the ages.
